The 4 Principles of Community Management

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

The Future of Communitees Blog on the 4 P’s of community management: Purpose, Participants, Platforms and Policing. Community blogger Francois Gossieaux adds his own perspective and offers a link to a research paper from a professor at Northwestern University detailing the concept.

Prior to reading this paper, I hadn’t really considered the idea of purposely targeting the community platform to best suit its members, but it makes perfect sense. In my sites, I’ve tended to take the approach of reacting to the users - letting them essentially build the site through demand for features. If you already have a strong handle on your target audience, though, why not build the best platform for them to communicate from Day One?

And while I prefer the term “moderating” to “policing”, the basic concept is sound. A strong community needs a system of checks and balances to ensure it doesn’t erupt into chaos. Ideally, that policing moderation is done by your MVPs.
